Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation gave Homeland Park Fire Station the gift of support today.
The charity arm of the national sub shop chain presented a thermal imaging camera, valued at $13,000, to the fire department to use in firefighting. The cameras are used to see into burning buildings to save lives and to help firefighters be more effective, said Anderson County Fire Chief Billy Gibson.
'The cameras detect different heat signatures, and since a human body is colder than a fire, it will allow us to see through the smoke,' he said.
The camera would not only be used to find victims, but to help guide firefighters through a building, and to help them find equipment in the blinding smoke, he said.
